Air-activated warmers that run up to ten hours, store for years, and cost about sixty cents a pair — the cheapest heat you can keep in a car.

HotHands Hand Warmers (40 pairs)

The verdict

A box of hand warmers is the most cost-effective warmth in any winter kit. HotHands are the standard: shake one open, it heats in a few minutes, and it stays warm for most of a day — in a glove, a boot, a pocket, or tucked inside a blanket. They're safe (no flame), they store for years unopened, and a 40-pair box splits between the car, the house, and the ski bag. Keep a dozen in the emergency kit and replace them every few winters.

What we like

  • +Up to 10 hours of heat per warmer; heats up in minutes
  • +Flameless, odorless, safe inside gloves, boots, and pockets
  • +Long shelf life unopened — stock the car kit once every few years
  • +Bulk box is very cheap per pair
  • +Also sold as larger body warmers and toe warmers for extra coverage

What to know

  • Single-use — once opened they're spent
  • Slower to activate in very cold air; warm one in a pocket first
  • Don't place directly against skin for long periods (can get very warm)
  • Partial boxes should be kept sealed; exposed warmers gradually lose potency

Full review

Hand warmers are the rare winter product that's cheap, foolproof, and genuinely important. In a stalled car, the first things that get dangerously cold are your hands and feet; a warmer in each glove and each boot, plus a couple tucked in under a blanket, changes a miserable, risky wait into a tolerable one. They're also what you want for the fifteen minutes of chaining up or digging out a tire with bare fingers.

HotHands are the brand everyone knows because they work consistently: shake, wait a few minutes, and you've got a pouch that stays warm for most of a day. They're flameless (iron oxidizing, nothing more), safe in a pocket or a kid's mitten, and they store for years in the sealed package. A 40-pair box is enough to seed the car kit with a dozen and still have plenty for the sidelines and the ski lift.

Practical notes: warm a fresh one in a pocket for a minute if it's very cold out — the reaction needs air and a little warmth to get going. Don't press them directly to bare skin for extended periods. And rotate them every few winters; the emergency kit ones should be newer than the ones in the bottom of the hunting bag.

Best for: Every car kit — a dozen in the glovebox is cheap insurance against a cold wait, and the rest go skiing.
