▸Maintainer vs. charger: a 0.75–1.25A maintainer (Battery Tender Junior) keeps a healthy battery topped off for months; a 5A smart charger (NOCO Genius5, CTEK MXS 5.0) also recharges a run-down battery overnight and can repair mild sulfation. A 10A+ charger adds faster recovery and engine-start assist.
▸AGM and lithium batteries need a charger with a matching mode. Most new cars with start-stop use AGM; check the battery label and make sure the charger has an AGM setting before buying.
▸Temperature compensation matters in winter: good chargers raise their charge voltage in the cold so the battery actually fills. NOCO, CTEK, and current Battery Tender units all do this.
