The verdict

The JNC660 is the anti-gadget. It's an 18-lb box with a sealed AGM battery, 46-inch heavy cables, and a voltmeter, and it'll crank a big engine over and over with the sustained current that small lithium packs can't match. It's the right tool for a shop, a farm, a fleet, or a garage where it can live plugged in. It's the wrong tool for a glovebox — it's heavy, it needs regular recharging, and it has no USB or flashlight.

Before lithium packs, the JNC660 was the jump starter, and in a lot of service bays it still is. The reason is the battery chemistry: a 22Ah AGM cell delivers sustained cranking current without the voltage sag a small lithium pack experiences on a long crank, and it does it at any temperature you'd realistically be working in. When a diesel at 0°F needs ten seconds of cranking instead of two, that matters.

The four-foot #2 gauge leads are the other practical advantage. You can set the box on the ground and still reach a battery mounted in the trunk, under a rear seat, or behind the fender of a work truck — no balancing a brick on the intake manifold. The voltmeter tells you the state of both the box and the dead battery, and the built-in charger means it lives on a shelf with the cord plugged in and needs no thought.

What it isn't is convenient. It weighs as much as a bowling ball, it has no spark-proof smart clamps (connect positive first, negative to ground, and pay attention), and it self-discharges like any lead-acid battery, so it needs a top-off every few months if it's not left plugged in. If you want a pack for the family sedan's glovebox, buy a GB40. If you want the thing that starts the plow truck every morning for the next decade, this is it.

Best for: Shops, farms, fleets, and home garages — anywhere the jump box can stay plugged in and the engine it has to start is big and cold.
