Security Chain SZ143 Super Z6 Review
Low-profile cable chains that fit tight wheel wells, install in minutes, and need no re-tightening — the default chain for modern cars and crossovers.

The verdict
The Super Z6 is what we'd put in the trunk of almost any passenger car or crossover headed over a mountain pass. It meets Class S clearance requirements (so it won't contact brake lines or bodywork in tight wells), the built-in rubber tensioner means you drive off without stopping to re-tighten, and the Z-pattern cable gives better lateral grip than old ladder cables. It isn't as aggressive as a real link chain in deep snow or on ice, and it won't last as many miles — trade-offs most drivers who chain up a few times a year will never notice.

What we like
- +Class S low-clearance design fits most modern cars, crossovers, and small SUVs
- +Built-in rubber tightener — no stopping to re-tension after the first hundred yards
- +Z-pattern cross members give continuous contact and better cornering grip than ladder cables
- +Much quicker and easier to install than link chains; fits on a mounted tire without moving the car far
- +Lighter and more compact to store than steel link chains
What to know
- −Cable chains wear faster than link chains — not for people who chain up daily
- −Less bite than a 12mm link chain on sheer ice or in deep, unplowed snow
- −Fitment is specific: SZ143 covers a range of sizes; other SZ numbers cover others — check SCC's chart
- −Like all chains, 30 mph maximum and off the car the moment you hit bare pavement
Full review
Most modern cars have almost no room between the tire and the strut or inner fender, and the owner's manual will tell you that only 'Class S' traction devices are approved. That rules out traditional ladder link chains and makes the Super Z6 the standard answer: its cable construction and low-profile Z-pattern cross members keep everything within the clearance limits, and a set fits in a case the size of a lunchbox. When chain controls go up on I-80 over Donner, this is what you see on most of the sedans that aren't turning around.
Installation is the reason to choose it over cheaper cables. Drape the cable over the top of the tire, connect the inside fastener behind the tire, bring the outside together and hook it, then stretch the built-in rubber tensioner across the face. Roll forward a car length to seat it and you're done — no stopping again to re-tighten, which is the step most people skip and which causes most chain damage. With a little practice it's a five-minute job per tire in daylight; do that practice in your driveway, not on the shoulder.
Know the trade-offs: the coil-wrapped cable is less aggressive than a 12mm link chain, so on glazed ice or in deep unplowed snow you'll notice the difference, and it'll wear through a couple of seasons of regular use where a link chain lasts five. For the driver who chains up a few times a winter to satisfy a pass requirement and get home, none of that matters. Verify your size against SCC's chart — the SZ143 covers a band of common sizes, and a neighboring SZ number covers the next band.
Best for: Passenger cars, sedans, and crossovers with limited wheel-well clearance that need legal, easy-to-install chains for occasional mountain driving.
