Use-case guide ยท 2026
An EV doesn't need a block heater or jumper cables for the traction battery, but it has a small 12V battery that runs the computers and door locks โ and when that dies, the car is a brick. Cold also cuts range by 20โ40% and makes tire pressure drop like any car's. The winter kit for an EV is smaller, but it's not nothing: a compact jump starter, the visibility basics, and the warmth kit for a roadside wait that doesn't end with a tow truck bringing gas.

You can jump the 12V system โ which is usually all that's needed to wake the car and let the high-voltage battery take over. Use a compact jump starter or cables at the manufacturer's designated 12V jump points; never touch the high-voltage system. Check the manual first.
Typically 20โ40% at freezing temperatures and below, more with cabin heat running. Preconditioning while plugged in, using seat and wheel heaters, and keeping tires inflated recover some of it.
